In the preparation of metallographic samples, there are various ways to grind this step, regardless of which method is used to obtain a deformation free sample surface that can be used for the next fine polishing step. The commonly used type is metallographic sandpaper. When selecting the initial abrasive particle size of metallographic sandpaper, only the damaged layer caused by cutting on the surface needs to be removed, so as to make the surface smooth. Each subsequent grinding process should gradually remove the deformation and minimize it, while also removing the damage caused by the previous process. For water resistant metallographic sandpaper, sufficient lubrication and moisture should be maintained throughout the entire grinding process (usually using clean water), which can greatly reduce the damage layer.

Question 1: How to know when to proceed to the next metallographic sandpaper grinding process?

When all the grinding scratches on your sample become uniform and no longer the same as before, you can replace them with finer metallographic sandpaper and proceed to the next step of grinding. To achieve the desired grinding effect, grinding should be carried out in a shorter time as required. Excessive grinding may damage the sample. For the first prepared sample, it should be observed while grinding, continuously spraying water to keep it moist and lubricated.

Question 2: How long can a piece of metallographic sandpaper last?

Usually, when severe wear and contamination occur on the metallographic sandpaper, it is necessary to replace it with a new one. Another issue is that although there is no obvious wear or contamination on the surface, it is manifested as prolonged grinding time or the surface of the sample no longer has a clear three-dimensional morphology, appearing to be in a flat surface; In this case, the depth of the deformation layer of the sample will increase exponentially, only because the grinding marks are more planar, so the sample's reflectivity is better, creating a more successful fabrication illusion. At this time, it is also necessary to replace it with a new metallographic sandpaper.

Question 3: How to extend the service life of metallographic sandpaper?

Generally speaking, proper storage and maintenance will effectively extend the service life of metallographic sandpaper. For example, rounding the bottom edge of the sample before grinding can reduce the possibility of metallographic sandpaper being scratched by sharp edges. After use, rinse thoroughly and tilt it onto a drainage rack. After natural air drying, place it flat in a storage cabinet to avoid direct sunlight, curling, and mold.

Question 4: How can I more easily remove the PSA backing of metallographic sandpaper?

Generally speaking, removing metallographic sandpaper without a PSA backing is very laborious. One method is to soak the metallographic sandpaper in hot water for a few minutes before removing it, and then remove it again. The PSA backing is easy to remove, and there will be very little adhesive residue. Simply wipe it with a cloth. Another way to solve this problem is to use adsorption membranes imported from the United States. Another method is to use an iron plate with a Teflon coating, which makes it easier to remove the PSA backing of the metallographic sandpaper.
